Community Development Program in 2011- 2012
Project name: Community Development Program (CDP)
Project Director Mr. Pol Pean
Person contact Tel: +855 6888 5555 / E-mail: director@wfc-kh.org
Target Group/ area About 6468 villagers (4746 females) will receive benefits from the projects. The location is rural Siem Reap, at Reul commune, Puok district.
History
The area is striking because of its extreme poverty. 75% of the population are classed as living in dire poverty. 85% are subsistence farmers trying to survive on roughly 75c per day. Figures on school attendance for the area show 88% of orphaned girls and poor children do not attend school at all. Those that do attend do not study further than the 6th grade at the state school.
Who we are ?
Community Development Program (CDP) was created by active members of Working For Children (WFC) in early 2010 to address the community’s short comings. In particular, CDP is designed for older children living at the Rainbow Orphanage who have discontinued studies due to lack of high level schooling access. This program will train and prepare them with community development skills and future careers in projects like the ones outlined below.
Training personnel are chosen from staff working with the Rainbow Orphanage since 2007. These trainers have been actively involved with provincial and national organizations in the community development field. They have also been working with volunteer students and organizations from many places around the world. From 2006 to 2010, they have built schools, houses, libraries, toilets, wells, many houses and school roofs. Currently they are successfully planting vegetables, raising pigs, chickens, ducks, and fish inside the Rainbow Orphanage.
In order for our quality of service and funds to become more efficient, we have decided to cooperate with NCDD ( The National Committee for Sub-National Democratic Development ) to help with our planning and development.
The Community Development Program will help rural village families change their lives.
Funding for project
These projects receive no government or NGO assistance, relying entirely on donations from charitable people from overseas. 100% of the funds will go directly into the Community Development Program, helping families obtain fishponds, water wells for vegetable gardens, toilets and school development projects.
Estimated Budget Need in 2011-2012: USD 67005

Mr. Pean meeting with Villgers
1)-BYCICLES FOR POOR CHILDREN
Beneficiaries :
About 25 to 30 village children and poor families will receive benefits from these bicycles which are the main transport to and from their school.
Bicycle cost USD 45 per bike
Need 25 of bicycles Amount USD1125
History
Bicycles are the main transportation for rural communities, especially for children going to school. Many of the children in our programs live far away from their schools. Sometimes a local school can be so far away children are forced to drop out of school. A bicycle can help prevent this and encourage the child to further their education. There are 3377 children (1665 females ) studying at public schools in the community.
2) Fund to build a village school
Beneficiaries:
About 129 of village children their age 6 to 8 years old in grade 1 to 3 (70 females) will receive the benefits from this school.
Location: Romduol village, Reul Commune, Puok district, Siem Reap province, Cambodia. About 45 km from Siem Reap town.
School building need: A school building with 3 rooms and a toilet with 2 rooms.
Sustainability:
Once the school is constructed the government has agreed to manage and staff it with a teacher and supplies at the government’s expense.
Estimate budget USD 31500
History
There are a few villages around our orphanage in need of the school for their young children ( 6-8 years old). The government is not planning to build as yet and currently ask families to send their children to schools too far away from their home. Two villages in our commune asked the government to send an education official 2 years ago to see the problems faced by the community but received no answer. Land has been set aside for the school and requests have been made to charitable people to support this project.
3)- FUNDING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
Beneficiaries : About 6468 villagers (3285 females ) will receive benefits from this project.
Location: 14 villages around Rainbow Orphanage sited at Reul commune, Puok district, Siem Reap province. Cambodia.
Budget need : USD 1680
Sustainability: This project is responsible by WFC and services by their smart children that have training on Environment & Cleaning protect.
Materials needs: This project will run only in the morning or afternoon and cost around $ 30 per class. This cost includes: -Trash bin : $ 5,- Paper/ marker: $ 3, -snack:$ 15, transportation $ 30, Admin: $ 4. About 25- 45 people per class.
History
People in rural areas do not understand the importance of our environment. Trash and waste is dumped all around their living areas and the landscape. There are only about 10 out of 200 families fortunate enough to have a proper trash and recycling container. This is the main cause of spreading diseases and malaria to thousands of children every year. To fight against these devastating diseases, we must gather our funds to support our trained personnel in spreading their knowledge to all the people living in the communities. There are 14 villages in our target area. WFC’s plans to visit each village 3 times per year to educate them about their environment.
4)- FUNDING FOR HOUSING
Beneficiaries :
About 770 of the poorest families ID listed by the government in December, 2010 at the Ruel commune will receive the benefits. This includes 204 widows.

What we hope/ plan: We hope to build 5 basic houses for the poorest families in our community per year.
Materials & Labor need: Simple houses (5m x 7m) at a cost of $2500.
This cost will include:
-Construction materials: $ 1945

-Kitchen’s material (pots, pan, plates, spoon, and a big jar): $ 100
- Labor: $ 180
- Transportation: $ 50
- Total: $ 2500
History
Everyone deserves a proper home, but 30 years of civil war has left our Government and its people in poverty. Even though the Cambodian government and its people are working hard to get back on our feet, about 35% of people are still living in poverty and without a proper home. Funds for these houses are very important for these families in their struggle to improve their lives.
Without the help from the government, their only hope is your generous support. Please help them.
Estimated Budget : USD 12500
5)- FUNDING FOR DIG THE POND
Beneficiaries : About 1151 villagers will receive the benefits from a pond.

What we hope/ plan: We hope to dig 3 ponds per year for our rural villages, to ensure a water supply in the dry season from March-July. The pond will be 25m x 15m and 3m deep. They will cost $ 2500 per pond.
Estimated Budget USD 7500
History
A pond is a crucial step towards eliminating health and hunger problems in impoverished villages. Lack of protein is a primary cause of malnutrition in rural Cambodian families, and is also the cause of some neurological, skin and digestive diseases. A fishpond (25m x 15m and 3 m deep) could provide about 250 families with water for cropping, washing and fishing in the dry season ( March- July).
The villagers have donated the land to dig the pond and to construct fences around fishponds. They promise to take care of the fishpond after it is completed
6)- FUNDING FOR WATER WELLS
Beneficiaries: About 3-5 of families will receive the benefits from a water well.
Location: At Reul commune, Puok district, Siem Reap province, Cambodia. About 45 km from Siem Reap town.
What we hope/ plan: We hope to supply 10 water wells per year for our rural & poor families. A water well is 5 meters deep and costs $ 280 per well. They provide water all year.
Estimated Budget USD 2800
History
Most rural Cambodians do not have enough water. Many families have no alternative but to bath and drink dirty water from scum-covered retaining ponds, or must carry water in plastic containers from rivers that are kilometers away. Children are traditionally the primary water carriers in the family, and often cannot attend school as it may take all day to carry water to their homes. Your donation of a water well can change all of this.
When a well is installed, the whole village is transformed. Health and hygiene are vastly improved. With plentiful clean water, vegetable gardens, fishponds and livestock can come into the community, eliminating hunger and providing resources for economic development. Children can quickly gather water from the community well and still have time to attend school and become the foundation for a better Cambodia. It all starts with your donation of water.
7)- FUNDING FOR FAMILY GARDEN
Beneficiaries: The family garden is a good way to support a poor family. We will teach them how to grow crops and then they will receive the benefits from this project.
Location: At Reul commune, Puok district, Siem Reap province, Cambodia. About 45 km from Siem Reap town.
What we hope/ plan : We hope to provide about 5 families per year in our target area at Reul commune with new gardens. It cost $ 280 per family and includes (garden’s materials: fish-net, fences, water-can, and seeds).
Estimated Budget USD 1400
History
Gardens are a major key to improving nutrition and eliminating hunger for rural Cambodian families. Many families traditionally subsisted on rice, without the knowledge, seed or irrigation needed to grow alternative crops. The addition of vegetables give the children and families much-needed vitamins and minerals to improve and sustain health.
The dry season can make gardening difficult - but with fishponds or water wells, gardens can be cultivated year-round. The families are taught how to raise cucumbers, cabbages, beans, peanuts, tomatoes, and other alternative crops. The gardens not only provide needed nutrition, but the families can sell vegetables at the market, generating critical income. And it all starts from your donation of a garden!
8)- FUNDING FOR SCHOOL GARDEN
Beneficiaries : about 300 to 700 village children in grade 3 to 6 at village primaries schools will receive skills from our project.
Location : The schools are in rural areas of Siem Reap province, Cambodia. About 45 km from Siem Reap town, specially around Rainbow Orphanage target areas.
What we hope/ plan: We hope to provide about 2 gardens for village schools per year in our target area in rural Siem Reap. It cost $ 1500 per school garden (10m x 20m) and includes garden’s materials, fish-net, fences, water-can, and seed).
Estimated Budget USD 3000
History
Gardens are a major key to improving nutrition and eliminating hunger for rural Cambodian families. All village schools in Cambia have space available for a garden. Currently children only learn from textbooks and they would benefit from learning basic skills about cropping. The addition of this project to their studies will also give the children much-needed vitamins and minerals to improve and sustain health.
